Career Tortoise is a free career exploration tool built on O*NET, the U.S. Department of Labor's occupational database which profiles careers across associated skills, abilities, knowledge, work activities, and interests.
The feature space
O*NET profiles roughly 900 occupations across hundreds of attributes: knowledge, skills, abilities, interests, work styles, and work context. Those attributes form the feature space, and each occupation a scaled profile across them.
Your picks
On the landing page, the picks select a subset of those features. The dot product of that selection with each occupation's profile gives the initial match.
The map
kNN retrieves the occupations most similar to the initial match and PCA sets the two axes. Both recompute on each click, redrawing the layout.
